The chosen one has turned 34 this year. Can you believe it? I’m sure he always has a lot to celebrate and of course he knows how to party. Whether you are a Potter fan or simply a death eater there is a lot to know about the events surrounding Harry. If you are a true Harry Potter fan then you can actually share your house pride this week, but which Hogwarts house are you? If you don’t care, here are still 20 things you may not know about the Harry Potter in the real work and muggle world.
1. Did you know that Harry Potter is 34?
How do we know? The 12 year old Harry and friends celebrated Nearly Headless Nick’s 500th anniversary of his October 31, 1492 deathday. Doing the math brings us to Harry being born in 1980. Specific dates are rare to find throughout the series, but J.K. Rowling did this in order for her audience to grow up and connect more closely with with the Harry Potter character. She began writing the book in 1990, the following year Harry would find out he was a wizard on his 11th birthday.
2. Harry Potter No Longer Tops the Charts…
Fifty Shades of Grey is now the best-selling book of all time in Britain, topping all the print sales of the Harry Potter Series.
3. There Could Be More Harry Potter Coming?
Warner Brothers has put together a Harry Potter Squad with the idea to expand on the series. Their first project is dealing with ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them‘ which takes place in the same world as Harry Potter, but long before his time. More books to come as well? Only time will tell.
4. Dumbledore was almost not Dumbledore…
Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore, only accepted the role because his 11-year-old granddaughter threatened to never speak to him again if he didn’t take it.
5. They were the chosen ones…
When asked to write an essay on their characters, Emma Watson submitted a 16-page paper, Daniel submitted a one-page essay, and Rupert never turned his in.
6. Not So Perfect Relationship
J.K. Rowling thinks she made a mistake with the Hermione and Ron relationship. She believes it was a ‘form of wish fulfillment‘ and Harry would have been a better match. She did however admit Ron and Hermione could be fine with some marriage counseling. Who knows what wizard marriage counseling is like. Though, Ron’s patronus is a jack terrier and Hermione’s is an otter. Jack terriers are known for chasing otters. To the chase go the spoils? Or should it have been Harry?
7. Dementors are real…
Dementors are based off J.K. Rowling’s time of depression in her twenties as a result of her divorce and her poverty.
8. Neville Longbottom The Chosen One?
Neville was close to being the chosen one. The Prophecy reads “The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches… Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies… and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not.” Both Harry and Neville were born at the end of the July with parents who defied the Dark Lord by being in the Order of Phoenix. Harry’s mom ends up sacrificing herself leaving Harry with the mark, but it just as easily could have been Neville as the chosen one.
9. A Hidden Hogwarts
How could no muggle spot the area that was Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? If muggles came across Hogwarts a sign would read “Keep Out: Dangerous Building”.
10. Twilight Sucks…
The least successful Harry Potter movie earned approximately $90 million more than the most successful Twilight movie at the box office.
11. Too Old For School
Actress Shirley Henderson — who played Moaning Myrtle — was the oldest actor or actress to play a student in the films, first appearing aged 37.
12. Cameron Diaz Sort of Played Role In Harry Potter…
Director Alfonso Cuarón suggested Radcliffe imagine he was looking at Cameron Diaz in a G-string if he had to act awkwardly in a scene.
13. King Cross Actually Exists…
London’s King’s Cross railway station has a platform 9 3/4 in dedication to Harry Potter.
14. Arthur Weasley To Die?
Arthur Weasley was supposed to die in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but was replaced with Sirius. J.K. Rowling decided the toll it would leave on Ron’s character would have been too much and strained the relationship between him and Harry. The consolation was not great for Harry.
15. Ron’s Future
Ron became an Auror, but quit the ministry. He went on to help his brother George at Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. Rita Skeeter said his days fighting the Dark Lord took a toll on him, but he may have just wanted to spend more time with his brother George. George still felt the effects of his twin brother dying and apparently his patronus (Spell based on happy thoughts) never worked again after Fred’s death.
16. The Half Blood Prince
Deatheaters are incapable of performing a patronus. The only Deatheater capable was Snape, who still held on to the strong love he had for Harry mother Lilly.
17. Real Life Twin Problems
The real life George, Oliver Phelps could only do 5 takes for Fred’s death scene. Seeing his brother pretending to be dead was very emotional for him.
18. Voldemort Was Old as hell…
Harry Potter definitely had the age advantage in their final battle. I guess age doesn’t make much difference when you are immortal. Well except for when Harry Killed him.
19. You Can Actually Take Wizard Classes
This can definitely help bring your wizarding skills to the next level.
20. The Wand and Only
The wand may have chosen Harry, but over 60 wands in all were used throughout the duration of filming.
Did you learn something? If not, then you are a true Harry Potter fan. Hopefully more movies and books are to come. Voldemort’s Lost Years? The Return of Snape? Dumbledore’s Earlier Years? Maybe just maybe….
