Towering 92-feet over the muddy banks of the Monongahela River, sits a pre-World War II piece of iron-making technology that helped power the regions steel industry in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Built in 1907, and reaching its peak of production in the 1950s, Carrie Furnaces six and seven remain the only non-operative blast furnaces still standing in the Pittsburgh District. At one time, this massive facility produced anywhere from 1,000 to 1,250 tons of iron per day, driving the local economy. Unfortunately, this historic site has sat dormant since the late 1980s after the collapse of the once-booming steel industry.
Fast-forward thirty years.
With the help of the Allegheny County Park Corporation, this unique site is being preserved for generations to enjoy in the years to come. Site and structural renovations continue to ensure large groups and events can use the site to it’s fullest potential, connecting the future with a piece of Pittsburgh history.
