Celebrate Cinco De Mayo with the Flaming Don Coronita

Take a step back into the mixology lab with expert mixologist, Tara Shinn, for a Cinco De Mayo themed margarita that is easy to make and delicious! Today she is teaching you how to drink a beer, a 151 proof shot and a margarita all at the same time. What do you call such a wonder? Drumroll please….The Flaming Don Coronita! And since Cinco de Mayo is on a Sunday this year, there’s no reason we can’t celebrate the whole weekend, starting with Friday! Just make sure you go easy on the Flaming Don Coronita’s or you might not make the whole way through.

Step 1:

Blend: 1 1/2 cups of ice, 2 oz blanco (that’s silver or unaged) Tequila- make sure you don’t skimp on the Tequila either (It is Cinco de May after all!), 1/2 oz agave nectar, the juice of 1/2 an orange, and 1 whole lime- keep one of the lime halves though!

Step 2:

Flip one of the lime halves completely inside out to form a small citrus bowl. Rub the fruit around the outside of a margarita glass and dip into a saucer of kosher salt to coat. (If you like you can remove the rest of the fruit from the lime bowl to clean it up- you can fit more margarita in the glass this way too!)

Step 3:

Pour the margarita into the glass and add the Coronita (that’s a baby Corona). Then top it with your lime bowl, filled with 1/2 oz of 151, and light it on fire!

Step 4:

As you sip the margarita, the Coronita will slowly replenish your cocktail, and at some point, the lime will tip over and you’ll get a nice little boost of alcohol. Of course you can tip it over whenever you want (or shoot it), but I find that some things are more rewarding when they come naturally. Also- I’m assuming I don’t have to tell you to blow out the flame before you start sipping- but I’ll throw it out there just in case you’ve had a few already.

If you try the Flaming Don Coronita, let us know what you think!
