By now when you think of New Zealand, you probably think of two things. Flight of the Concords and The Hobbit. If you’re not a ridiculous human being, you probably default to thinking about The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings because they’re gigantic franchises and both Tolkien trilogies were shot in New Zealand. You know who isn’t shy about boasting about the Hobbit trilogies being shot in New Zealand? New Zealand.
Air New Zealand Hobbit Flight Safety Video
I fly a fair amount every year. I didn’t think I flew all that much until I met people my age who still have yet to take a ride on an airplane. That kind of blows me away in this day and age. I’ve never seen anything even remotely like this safety video. Thinking back on all the flights I have ever taken, the ones I can remember anyway, the part that is always the same and gets ridiculously old to sit through is the safety instructions. I have experienced them three different ways: the typical way where a flight attendant is talking too closely to the intercom and the other flight attendants are acting out the safety steps in a less than enthusiastic fashion, the less typical way where audio plays through the cabin and there’s a video to watch of all the safety steps, and the way I have only seen once which was a flight attendant’s customized speech that was so hilarious, nobody cared that she told the entire plane that if we’re going down, we should probably just scream and wait to die. I’m still very good friends with that flight attendant.
This Hobbit-ized safety video is awesome for a number of reasons. There is some serious star power in that Air New Zealand pulled in for this less than 5 minute video. The props and movie makeup are as movie-quality as the actual stars. In fact… everything in this flight safety video is movie quality. With the final chapter of the The Hobbit trilogy on the way, The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, Air New Zealand is all-in with trying to capitalize on the tourist opportunities from the movie. I can’t blame them there. The trailer looks great.
